My Virtual Chemistry Kit
AR Application
Project Description
A lot of people have difficulty understanding the stereochemistry (3D orientation) of molecules in organic chemistry. The 3D orientation of a molecule has a large impact on its reactivity. For example, the location of the substituents has implications on the biological and chemical reactivity of the molecules. It’s hard to visualize the 3D orientation of the molecules on a sheet of paper, especially when considering the specific angles each functional group is held at. But it is very important to understand the 3D form of molecules because the way these molecules are oriented changes how they react. That's why I created My Virtual Chemistry Kit.
Design Challenge
Create an augmented reality application prototype in Unity.
MY ROLE
I completed this project individually as part of Dr. Ching-Hua Chuan's CIM 433 Augmented Reality class.
TIMELINE
SPRING 2021 2 weeks
TOOLS
Unity3D, Maya, Vuforia, C#
Process
Ideation Modeling of molecules At first, I used Maya to create my 3D models. But it was much harder to import and add textures to, so instead, I made them in Unity which was fairly easy as they are made up of simple shapes: spheres and cylinders. Testing with vuforia Code, test, Code Build app
Results
An augmented reality application that allows the user to visualize the 3D orientation of molecules in real-time. Simply scan one of our molecule cards to generate a 3-dimensional model you can interact with. You can scale and rotate the model to investigate and learn more about the molecular geometries.
